Six steps to safe Summer fun

It’s the damage you do to your skin when you’re young that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer later in life. Annabel has the right idea when it comes to keeping her cool in the sun. Avoid the pain and shame of sunburn with these simple tips to keeping your cool this summer:

1. Rub it in

Apply generous amounts of suncream - SPF15 or higher - to clean, dry skin before going out in the sun. Reapply every two hours and always after swimming or working up a sweat

2. Put it on

Throw on a long-sleeved top, wrap a sarong around your waist or a bandana on your neck to ban the rays. Close-weave natural fibres like linen or cotton will keep you coolest

3. Wear it out

Whether it’s the cool beach cowboy look or chic hippy chick, a wide-brimmed hat is your best bet to beat the heat off your head, face and neck

4. Seek shade

The sun’s rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm so avoid the lobster look by taking an extra long leisurely lunch under a tree or chill beneath a beach brolly

5. Look smart

Your eyes need protection too, so here’s the perfect excuse to make like a movie star and wear a good-quality pair of 100% UV protection sunnies all day long
